Kelmscott School Workshop

The East London Classics Summer School had a wonderful day at Kelmscott School in east London, delivering a full programme of GCSE Greek language workshops. We were given a very warm welcome by staff and students alike and even treated to a delicious fish and chip lunch, which was much appreciated!

The day began with vocabulary drills focusing on easily confused words, followed by intensive work on the definite article and all forms of nouns. We then explored verb forms, including all active tenses, the middle voice and passive voice (present and imperfect), and some tricky middle-only verbs. Students took part in a variety of engaging activities such as spot tests, Bingo games, and card-sorting tasks, all designed to reinforce key grammatical structures in a fun and interactive way.

In the afternoon, we turned to unseen translation practice, tackling more ‘annoying’ words, exploring derivations, and working through an unseen past paper text. The students showed excellent focus, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout the sessions, asking thoughtful questions and supporting one another’s learning.

Our sincere thanks go to the Classics Department for their warm hospitality and commitment to their students’ success. It was truly inspiring to see such passion for the ancient world.
